Everyone loves a cozy fire in the fireplace when it’s cold outside. To enjoy your fireplace safely and extend the life of the fireplace chimney, consider having it inspected and serviced annually by
Baltimore Heating and Cooling.
The major cause of chimney fires is creosote buildup and soot, which can restrict air flow and damage the fireplace chimney. Even a gas fireplace chimney can become blocked by bird’s nests and other debris.
Baltimore Heating and Cooling
services range from annual safety checks of fireplaces and chimneys to total chimney tear down and rebuilds. An annual chimney inspection looks for buildup and blockages and if your chimney has been damaged by degradation over time or a severe weather event, we can fix it good as new.
Flue Relining
Most masonry chimneys have clay tile liners that can deteriorate over time and some have no liner at all. Unlined chimneys allow heat to transfer through brick which can cause adjacent structures to catch fire. Unlined chimneys can also allow carbon monoxide and smoke to enter your home.
While there are many sources telling people that installing a new chimney liner is a DIY project, the chimney experts at Baltimore Heating and Cooling strongly recommend you let skilled professionals complete this job. The proper installation of a stainless steel liner creates a safer chimney within an existing masonry fireplace system. There are too many variables that, if not done correctly, could cause your chimney to violate safety codes and create further hazards.
Crown Repair
A chimney crown is just that, a crown of masonry that covers the top of your chimney. If the crown is cracked, water is able to seep into the masonry below and can lead to costly repairs. The experts at Baltimore Heating and Cooling will repair damaged chimney crowns and prevent further damage with a flexible waterproof sealant. This process dramatically extends the life of your chimney and can save you money in the future.
Chimney Caps & Damper Repair
Chimney caps protect the flue from water, ice and snow as well as prevent critters from making their home in your chimney. While screened caps have become the standard, we also off top-sealing damper/chimney caps for our clients who wish to take flue preservation and energy saving measures a step further. A properly functioning damper along with a chimney cap add another level of safety as well as keeping heat and energy in and water and animals out.
Chimney Reconstruction
Baltimore Heating and Cooling chimney rebuilds
include tear down, disposal, and code reconstruction of your existing chimney. The most common types of required chimney rebuilds include:
- Partial chimney rebuilds:
small chimneys (no scaffolding) or only the top few courses of a large chimney including a new crown.
- Flashing area up chimney rebuilds:
Substantial mortar and/or brick deterioration has eliminated the possibility of a tuck pointing restoration. The structure is torn down to the flashing area near the roofline, and then the chimney rebuild commences including a new crown.
- Total chimney rebuilds:
Complete tear down of the outer layer of the brick on a chimney including a new crown. In most cases the firebox, hearth, and smoke chamber do not have to be removed. Total reconstruction is necessary when the chimney is leaning, has severe mortar deterioration or severe brick spalling has occurred from ground level up, etc.

Chimney Sweeping & Inspection
Masonry chimneys should be inspected & cleaned annually. Cleaning includes the chimney, firebox, smoke chamber, smoke shelf and the damper. We will clean out the ashtrap for a small additional charge.
Prefabricated fireplace systems are made of metal. These fireplace and flue systems are designed, tested and manufactured to be used with each other. Due to changes in design, replacement parts can be hard to find for older units. This makes annual inspections and cleanings of these types of units even more important.
Chimneys exhaust a number of substances from your home including smoke, soot, water vapor, and creosote. As smoke rises from your chimney, soot and creosote condense on the interior walls causing a build up. If the chimney is not cleaned, the creosote can ignite, causing a dangerous chimney fire of up to 2000 degrees. These fires can damage the chimney and set surrounding combustibles of your home aflame.
